The RedNote app, everything you need to know
Hi everybody, this is Alex from winbox, Today, I'm gonna talk about the TikTok ban and the TikTok refugees, we all know that the potential bill of TikTok ban might not be withdrawn by 19 January, and the most hilarious thing is that, even Mark Zuckerberg couldn't be imagining, people are running away from TikTok to the RedNote app! To another Chinese Company owned app, the RedNote app, Xiao Hong Shu (小红书) in Mandarin, ranking to the top on App Store and play store in the US.
What is RedNote app?
So far by 15 January, the RedNote, which is Xiao Hong Shu (小红书), still doesn't have it's own English verison, or English Name, so the term "RedNote" is none official name that comes and share from Tiktok creators, however, the term "Little Red Book" is way more correctly from the direct translation of "小红书", if I do say so myself.
Let's do a quick fact about the RedNote company.
Little Red Book is a Chinese social media and e-commerce platform founded in 2013 by Miranda Qu and Charlwin Mao. It combines user-generated content, product reviews, and shopping features, primarily targeting young, urban consumers. The platform is known for its focus on lifestyle, fashion, beauty, and travel content, and has grown into one of China's most influential social commerce platforms.
In general, You can call it a RedNote confidently, because every post you create on this platform, it's called 'Note', which is 'Bi Ji' (笔记📒) in Mandarin. And I do see some videos saying that the name of the Red note, 'The Little Red Book' origin from China's former president and chairman Mao's Quotations (毛主席语录), I hate to talk about politics, but there was a certain connection between them, by that means, the US TikTok refugees are coming to the commie space, it is hard to tell the feeling for American users.
Is RedNote the Chinese version of TikTok?
The answer is no! I know this might be awkward the transit from one phenomenon short video app to a App you probably have never heard of, and people just keep jumping in RedNote app with the idea that this is a alternative app of TikTok, especially for those content creators, they are not the same app obviously, and if you're looking for a TikTok 99% look alike App, then you should try 'Douyin', that's the real origin of tiktok, owned by the same company, Bytedance.
The RedNote app is more like a combination of Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok, you can share your photos your daily life, your work, where you live, what you do last night like Instagram! And also there are so many talents share their home decor ideas, babysitting skills, Flower arrangement techniques, or Drawing skills, this make it a Pinterest atmosphere. And of course the Red Note app do have short video and long video functions built in, that video feature could be a replacement for TikTok.
Why is RedNote app so popular in China?
In China, people tends not to use search engine anymore, like baidu.com (Chinese version of Google), because the search result are a full of fake advertisements and cabbage, this is one of the reason why Rednote App gets popular in China, people can get direct, real, useful, and valuable answers from rednotes post, or you could call it 'Bi Ji 📒', and people are generally friendly and nice here compared to other a social App communities.
On the other hand, Users on RedNote are more inclusive and friendly towards the LGBTQ community and people of diverse racial backgrounds. In case you don't know, The social network in China has serious issues with racial and regional discrimination, and users tend to use discriminatory language more directly compared to the US.
Here is Bob posting his selfie and asking people to pick a Chinese Name for him, and he got 2800 comments in just 5 hours!!!
Will there be a potential ban of RedNote app in the US?
It is hard to tell, but from what I have heard, the rednote company is recruiting massive people to do the content review job, yes, they are now facing the radical stress from the Chinese government lol! I could tell the RedNote CEO is getting excited and kind of fucked at the same time, if he couldn't handle well on these potential political and censored contents at the right time and let them pouring out, he gotta be in jailed, no kidding.
In general, TikTok is still be remained in the US, it could be banned in 19 January, who knows next when Trump come to his position, it could be back anytime, and those Tiktok refugees are going back to TikTok definitely, in that case, the rednote is still safe, because it is not compatible as 'Zuck Markerberg' Meta empire.

What can I do and talk on RedNote?
Stay out of politics, Stay out of politics, Stay out of politics! That's probably the only red line you should keep in mind while you are using RedNote, don't talk about Xijing ping, Tiananmen square, or 8964 here, you are going to get banned for sure. However you are freely to talk shit about US govert, Biden, Trump as long as it doesn't link to the Chinese domestic politics, government, high-level officials. I know this sounds like a double standards, which it is, but we can do nothing then about it, unless you quit it.

Yes, for Chinese RedNote content creators, it's super easy to make money. Let's say if you got 100k followers, your monthly revenue here would be approximately 50k-20k CNY, and the business model is different from TikTok, I will talk about it in the future.
Is it a good place for TikTok refugees?
So far I would say yes.
